Red, swollen and bleeding gums are all signs of gingivitis, the first stage of gum disease. If left untreated and plaque continues to build up, deep pockets form in the gums. This contributes to more inflammation and faster plaque accumulation that is harder to clean. Once this sticky substance hardens into tartar, regular brushing and flossing are no longer effective. Periodontal treatment is the only way to stop the progression and prevent teeth and bone loss.

Periodontal treatment is a 2-step deep cleaning procedure below the gum line.

Scaling & Root Planing

At Capital Dental, Dr. Grubbs and Dr. Umphlett perform scaling and root planing to remove excessive amounts of plaque and bacteria at the root.

• Scaling Planing:  Scaling removes plaque, bacteria, and tartar above and below the gum line
• Root Planing:  Capital Dental performs root planing to smooth out the root and help the gum reattach to the tooth.

Scaling eliminates all traces of plaque and tartar above and below the gum line.  Our dentists make sure the entire area is clean, all the way down to the base of the gum pocket. Once scaling is complete, root planing will begin. Your dentists in Jackson will smooth the root surface so the gums can properly reattach. It may take more than one visit to complete both processes, and a local anesthetic may be needed.

A follow-up visit will be scheduled to see how well your gums have healed and to measure the depth of your gum pockets.  Additional treatment may be necessary if they pockets have gotten any deeper.

If your condition requires more aggressive treatment, we may recommend gum surgery. The newest innovation in advanced gum surgery is laser periodontal treatment. This modern dental technology replaces using a scalpel to cut soft tissue, and no stitches are needed. No cutting means a faster recovery time, less root exposure and sensitivity, and minimal bleeding compared to traditional endodontic surgery.
